What Is Modified Bitumen?
Modified bitumen is an asphalt-based multi-ply membrane system where the asphalt is modified with polymer compounds — SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) for flexibility or APP (atactic polypropylene) for heat resistance. The system is installed in multiple layers: a base sheet plus one or more modified cap sheets.
This multi-ply construction means that even if the top layer is damaged, the underlying layers continue to protect the building — a redundancy that single-ply systems cannot match.
