Built-Up Roofing (BUR) for Commercial Facilities
Built-up roofing is the original commercial flat roof system with over a century of proven performance. MAZE installs and repairs BUR systems for DFW facilities where multi-ply redundancy and heavy traffic durability are priorities.
What Is Built-Up Roofing (BUR)?
Built-up roofing (BUR) is constructed by alternating layers of bitumen (asphalt or coal tar) and reinforcing fabric (fiberglass or organic felts) to create a multi-ply waterproofing membrane. A typical BUR system consists of 3 to 5 plies, topped with gravel surfacing or a mineral-surfaced cap sheet.
BUR has been in continuous use on commercial buildings for over 100 years. Its multi-ply construction, failure modes, and repair techniques are well understood — making inspection, maintenance, and repair straightforward.

Best Applications for Built-Up Roofing (BUR)
BUR excels on roofs with heavy equipment traffic — buildings with dense HVAC installations, communication equipment, or other equipment requiring regular access. The gravel surfacing and multi-ply construction resist puncture damage better than single-ply membranes.
